Often times the weather were I live is extreme. Because of our elevation, we have much cooler temps and heavier snow. For example the forecast for Canton NC, was snowy and a lo of 9 degrees. At my house it was very snowy, high winds and a balmy 2 degrees. That is ridiculous.
So we call it Narnia. These pictures were taken one year ago when we graciously received 26 inches a week before Christmas 2009.

We are however thankful for our mountain home, it fits us well.

A Life of Greatness...

What is a great life to you? In our post-modern society greatness is sought out by everyone. Everybody wants to be great. Greatness is usually judged by how famous, rich, and important you are.

How does God judge greatness? The word of God tells us of a man named John the Baptist. We learn much about him. The most amazing thing we hear about him comes strait from Christ. Jesus calls John the baptist the greatest man ever born. What a statement...In Gospels we can find some aspects of his greatness.

You will notice throughout the Gospel's description of John the Baptist some aspects of a great life....
Background…
1. No royal birth, born into a plain common ministry family
2. He had no formal education, lived isolation
3. He made no fashion statement, he had no concern for what was in style
4. He was not involved with any institution
5. He started no real movement
6. The religious leaders despised him…he despised them
7. He spent his last days in Jail, eventually was beheaded.
8. Despised, hated, and decapitated, at a young age (early thirties)
In the worlds eyes this is anything but greatness

I. Life that is Christ Centered
a. “He must increase, I must decrease”….”I am unworthy”
b. Understood his calling ---to prepare
c. Uncertainties…he went to Christ..
II. Life that Calls for Repentance
a. Requires a Response
i. Living in such a way that the lost people in your life respond with persecution or repentance
b. True Repentance
i. Not, religious repentance---having sorrow for everyone elses sins and not yours…pointing out theirs and not yours, self –righteousness,
ii. Pagan-assuming God is not good and we have to manipulate him “if I tell God I am sorry he will he is obligated to help me, GOD is Sovereign and good and free to do what he wants…he is not a good luck charm
iii. Worldly Sorrow—feeling bad and seeking someone to tell its okay…celebrities are notorious for this….Oprah…Dr. Phil, or Barbara Walters..No new life, No Holy Spirit, No Jesus….counterfeit.
iv. Mere Confession—this is confusing …I was wrong I am sorry…”I thought you were sorry last week…you will be sorry next week too”
v. Blame Shifting---I did this but it was their fault….Adam, Eve…
vi. Minimizing---At least I did not kill someone….Well I am not a Nazi…
vii. Excuse making – Yeah I did it, but it was the way I was raised, I did not get hugs when I was a kid
c.
i. Is …Conviction…this is of God through the Holy Spirit…through the conscience, the scriptures, bible teaching, testimonies…
ii. Confession…this is agreeing with God..telling God your sin
iii. Repentance….is not managing or minimizing your sin…its killing it…
iv. Reconciliation….This were God and people are reconciled
III. Life that Endures
a. Critics
i. Scoffed him
ii. Spectacle
iii. Confronted them
b. Persecution …
i. he was in prison for…
ii. he died by losing his head
iii. By the way…if you are not experiencing persecution you will
IV. Life that is Mastered …he did not master anything…he was mastered by Christ
a. By the Word of God
b. The Holy Spirit
i. Spirit filled…..Life out of the box….
c. Even unto death---Are you willing to let God lead you into what he has for you even if its death?

Pa Burnette...

(another entry from my wife's blog...this one is about my great grandfather, Emma and Macy's great great grandfather)

This year Pa Burnette will turn 95, and lately he hasn't been doing too well. We are coming to the sad realization that there won't be many more Christmas lunches at Pa's house, or pictures of the five generations every year. So my family took some time to go visit with Pa Burnette this week.

Even short visits with Pa are rich with wisdom. Here are few things about Pa you might be interested to know: This year is the first year he has not tended a garden (of over 100 tomato plants, mind you!). And though his name is Elbert, they call him "Tobe". He got the nickname from the family mule years ago. Why? Because he worked as hard as a mule and was just about as stubborn. Pa has been married and widowed twice and loved them both more than life itself. I only met Jenny, his latter wife, who was as much a gem as he. And of all the times I have visited Pa he never fails to mention her name....and how much he misses her. Another interesting thing about Pa...he's never owed a man anything. When visiting with him the other day, he told me that he gave Jenny $500 back in '65 to get a new TV. She came home with an $800 TV and told Pa she hard charged the other $300. He immediately gave her $300 and told her to go pay it off, he never intended to be in debt for anything, especially not a TV! Another fond memory of Pa....his dog, Holly. She's a deaf cocker spaniel who walks with a limp and can't see a thing. And she's fat as mud because Pa feeds her candy.....her favorite...Werther's Originals. And despite her deaf ears, Pa still issues the old commands, "Get up in your chair" (Jenny's chair) and "Shut up!"

Such fond memories, and you know what I love.....No matter when you go see Pa and no matter who is there, it will always be the same memories. Emma will eat all his peppermint candies, she'll feed Holly all of the Werther's, Macy will sit in his lap the whole hour and just pat his belly, we'll talk about gardens and good old fashioned hard work, he'll share fond stories of Jenny, and before we leave he will give us bean seed and rhubarb.

Maybe it sounds boring to most, but to me its precious. Oh the blessing of gleaning wisdom from older generations! And what a testimony a 95 year old man has when he can say he has seen the work of God throughout five generations!

Cracks

Last evening (Sunday) we rushed home after a day of church and began our usual bed time rush. Spring Break is over (sadly), and I knew Emma needed to be in bed at a decent hour, which had passed two hours prior to "the rush." I automatically started dishing out the usual commands, "Emma, brush your teeth......Emma get your pajamas on!.....Macy, I've got your cereal. Are you ready to eat?......Timmy did somebody let Smokey out?.....Emma, I said brush your teeth.....And did you potty before bed?.....No, it's too late for a snack.......I SAID BRUSH YOUR TEETH!!!!!
(Do you get why I call it "the rush"?)

Anyhow, I finally got everyone settled down, and I went to tuck Emma into bed. My plan was to get it done quickly and she would go to sleep quickly (yeah, right!). But nonetheless we began our usual routine. We got a drink of water. We turned her night light on, and we sang her lullaby (which happens right now to be "Glory, glory, glory Jesus touched me). When we finished singing she said, "Momma, I was wondering if you could just lay down with me for a few minutes." I started to say, "No, it's bed time. You have school tomorrow.' But then I thought....I should never be too busy to snuggle. Twenty more awake minutes won't make that much difference at 7:00am tomorrow. So I paused, and we snuggled, and I am so glad I did because God used 20 simple minutes to again teach me a complex truth.

You see, Emma is afraid of the cracks in her room. Her bed is next to the wall, and that leaves a small crack between the wall and her bed. In her six year old mind, something might come out of that crack at night, especially in the dark, and get her. So just to be sure she's safe, we line that crack with pillows every night.

After we took care of all the cracks in the room, she tried to go to sleep, but I could tell she seemed worried I might leave, so she hugged me as tight as she could, even while we sang. Then, when it came time for our prayers, she said, "Momma, can you just pray tonight?" Of course that was fine, so I began praying, and in my prayer I began praying specifically for Emma. In the midst of mentioning her name several times, I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I paused, looked down, and I saw Emma hold her hand up as if to say, "Stop." Then she said, "Excuse me, but could you just ask Him to help me not be afraid?" And I did. And within 5 minutes she was gone.....solid gone!

So, here's my big truth from my little moment....

You see, our life is full of cracks. Big ones, small ones, dark ones, scary ones. Some of our cracks are fears that leave us terrified and frightened, others are sins that leave us defeated and beaten, others are pressures that leave us weary and down trodden. And what do we do? We try to cover the cracks, but soon we find that there just aren't enough pillows.

But you see, Emma had the right concept. She knew those pillows could be easily moved. But she also knew there was one who was greater than those pillows and bigger than her fears. You see, we have a heavenly Father who knows, is interested in, and has even created the most delicate parts of us. I love that Psalm 139 reminds us, "O Lord you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up ; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. "

He knew Emma's fears before I even prayed for her. He, too, knows our cracks when no one else does and before we ourselves are even aware of them. And, yet, he gives us a great promise...a great comfort in Isaiah 41:10, "fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Why? Not because we deserve it, but because he is God.

Separatists...

In recent days I have been away from the "blog world". During this time I have been reflecting on life in general. One thing that I truly began to notice is the "revival" in pro-separation in the SBC and other evangelicals. The separation is rooted in one's view on the origin of salvation (monergism...salvation coming from God alone, which should be rallying point instead of a point of division) and then moves on to subjects like Calvinism, hyper-Calvinism, Armenianism,...etc...etc.

This type of separation is also found in the Independent Fundamental Baptist movement as well. The particular type of separation that I referring to is the sometimes called 2nd degree or 3rd degree separation. For example, If I hang out with someone who you think is a heretic,(keep in mind my convictions have not changed) you my brother who thinks like me, will not hang out with me because of who you "think" is a heretic, is associated with me.

Now, this type of separation may be justified when someone is truly living outside of scripture, but when it is an issue likened to that of Calvinists/Armenians, in which brothers from the same denomination disengage from fellowship, it becomes ridiculous and sinful.

Some questions that frustrate me....(theses questions are for both sides of the argument)...

When did Baptist theological debates become a spectacle, where calling the opposing argument equal to militant Islam become acceptable?

Why has many modern SBC pastors distorted their own history to make a point?

When did winning a debate and tampering with surveys, to prove a stance, become the priority of many Pastors in the SBC?

Why will a reformed baptist not attend a SBC church that does not have "reformed" in their sign?

How can those who love the doctrines of Grace not practice the very thing they argue over?

On this day...the day our Lord suffered for our sins, absorbed the wrath of God, appeased His Anger and won the Victory....let us remember what binds us together....THE GOSPEL...not a system of theology

Some of the best student ministry I have ever seen has been done by those who do it for free. It is not the youth pastor with all the degrees or the youth guru at a conference. The best are those who come faithfully to the functions and invest their lives and time into teenagers. Thank God for you sunday school teachers, D-leaders, volunteers, cooks, etc..

I am getting ready to start a series through the book of Matthew. In preparing for this series it never ceases to amaze me how much God has to say in His word.

In Matthew 6 we find Jesus in the middle of His sermon on the mount and he is speaking volumes to us. He tells us to study the birds and the flowers. He asks if these creatures seem to worry or toil. Of course not, they do what God created them to do, and that is Glorify HIM!! Our father knows our needs and He will take care of them. Jesus says...."seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things (our needs) will be added unto us".

Just like the birds and the flowers our Job is to glorify God. We are to enjoy him and take joy in Him. This makes him look good!!!

Pray for me as prepare the messages.

A White Advent

Hey guys well we have received a blessing from God here in WNC. HEAVY HEAVY SNOW....alot of heavy SNOW.. here is a picture of Emma suiting up...very cute

The second picture was taken during friday when the snow began. After the storm only one rail on that same fence was able to be seen. It still looks like Narnia at my house. On Cold Mountain we had around 24". So as long as the rain does not take it all away from the ground....we will have a White Advent.

It was free love that Brought our savior from the throne of Glory into the realm of sinful man. Are we to forget the importance of the Savior's birth and celebrate the Gifts under the tree? Heaven forbid. Let us be reminded each day of the essential nature of the Gift of God. It took the precious blood of Christ to save the vilest sinner.

SO why should we call it advent? Because advent means to come....it is the celebration of the Coming of Christ.........yet we wait as well. Brothers and sisters let us celebrate with vigor the HOPE that came to man in the form of a little baby. And celebrate the coming KING of KINGS on the WHITE STEAD. SOLI DEO GLORIA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Turkey and other thoughts.....

Well after three thanksgiving meals....yes three....I am ready for a cheeseburger and some hot wings! The thought of turkey and dressing is just not as appealing as it was last week. Spending time with family was awesome though! Tuscola advanced to round 4 in the play offs!!! So the boys have another battle Friday night. Beth, Emma Grace, and Macy Willow are all great. I am so blessed to have the family that God has given me!!!

Thank God for all the blessings of life!

Well all who follow me..

We have had our new bundle of Joy. Included in the "bundle" is restless nights and dirty diapers....instant love, snuggling on the couch, moments that will only happen once. On of the Greatest things about being a dad is you voice. When I speak my girls automatically hear me and search for me in the room. This is especially seen in Macy. When I speak she will strain her neck to find me.....I am so undeserving of the love my family gives me......

This reminds me of how we should be with our heavenly father. We should seek him out and hear his voice when speaks.

Macy Willow Burnette 7.4 pounds 20 inches was born today. Mom was a champ today and baby seems to be doing well. Willow Gaelic form of 'freedom". Our first child has the name Grace...reminding us of God's marvelous grace. Willow shall remind us of the freedom we have from the chains of sin. God is good...I am speechless...

Magnifying Christ in Death, Pain, and Suffering

Magnifying Christ through Pain and Death

(Here is a great friend of mine--Nate. Nate lives to magnify the Lord in all aspects of his life. I have seen this first hand. This is a picture I took of him while we were on a mission trip in Wyoming. The mountains in the background are the Grand Tetons. May the Lord bless you and your family and the ministries that he has planned for you.)

How can we live a life not wasted while we are going through hardships? This is a question we all will deal with in one way or another. It all goes back to our passion for living….and dying. God created us to live with a single passion to joyfully display his supreme excellence in all spheres of life. The wasted life is the life without this passion. God calls us to pray and think and dream and plan and work not to be made much of, but to make much of him in every part of our lives.

SO, how are we to do this in a Pain and suffering and eventually death? What are we to do with statements like; “to die is gain”,” I will honor Christ in my body through life or death”. Philippians 1 answers these questions. In verses 20 and 21 we see the answers.

Philippians 1.20-21

I. Living a Life that is Unashamed.

This is an unusual statement. Look at verse 20. Paul’s desire is to love a life that was unashamed. He wanted Christ to be honored in his body. He did not want himself honored but Christ. He wanted all glory and praise to be pointed toward the Lord. Notice how he stated that he hopes, and expects Christ to be glorified in His body, whether it be death or Life. Nobody likes shame. We don’t wont shame, because we want honor. Not Paul. Yes, he did not want to be shamed, but he wanted the honor to go to the Lord. He is different because Christ was the burning center of His life. We can learn a lot from Paul. As long as Christ was exalted, Paul could take it. You see what we value most will drive our actions. And if what we value most is anything but Jesus, then we a guilty of idolatry.

What is so different about Paul and the “normal” Christian? What are some things that get in the way of living a Life that is unashamed? Why do we struggle with this?

II. Honoring God in our bodies

The key to honoring God is in the treasure. What do you treasure above all things? Whenever you treasure something or something has tremendous value to you, you cherish its beauty or power or uniqueness, you want to tell others about it and draw their attention to it so they can experience what you have. This is why Paul’s goal was that Christ be magnified. This was so that others would see the Joy that Christ brought to Paul. This is what it means to Magnify Christ…..to show the MAGNITUDE OF HIS VALUE!

Why should Christ be the treasure? What about Christ brought Joy to Paul’s life?

III. Glorifying God in Death

Death comes and interrupts the plans of life. This happens many times. I could not tell you how many people I have seen get caught unexpected by death. It causes stress and sometimes destruction. How can we Glorify Christ even in death? Because death robs us of our earthly treasures and relationships many people fear death. Paul could embrace death, pain, and suffering because his treasure (Christ) rules over death, pain and suffering. This is why Paul could say “to Live is Christ, but to die is Gain” . Paul had resolved that while he was living he would live for Christ. But if and when he died it would be Gain. Why gain? Because he would be with Christ, he would behold his treasure. This is how Paul, Peter, James, Jude, and the like lived their life. FEARLESS……May we live this way. As the song says, “I don’t have time to maintain these regrets when I think about the way HE LOVES US” This would have been on Paul’s IPod. How can we have hope even in death? Why should we live fearless in this life? What have we to fear knowing that the sovereign LORD Jesus Christ controls and Conducts our lives?

Here is a few pictures from camping. God has blessed me with an awesome family.
Well we are in the final leg of baby #2...in a few weeks will have another little princess in the bunch. We have named ourselves the princess posse!

Well God has richly blessed me so much. I have been reading a book called the Gospel Primer. The book allows you to preach the Gospel to yourself. I daily need to be reminded of the Gospel. Currently the book has focused on God's love for us. I have thought about it daily of the love he has for us. Here is a quote from a song

Can you imagine threatening Lazarus after he had been raised from the dead? Nero says, "Lazarus I'm going to kill ya"....Lazarus: "haha ha" Nero: Stop haha haing I'm going to kill you like I'm killing all the Christians"...Lazarus: Haven't you heard death is dead death is DEAD death is DEAD How do threaten one with death, who has been there, and Knows the one who has let him out?

O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)

The Rooted Christ Follower

A true display of Christianity is so needed in our world today. Oh we need this in our world today. We have weak kneed believers who have never got off the milk of scriptures and moved to the meet. How we need to present ourselves before God mature in the faith.
Colossians 2.6-7
I. Lives by Grace (we receive Christ through grace..not on our own merits) I must live in full dependence of Him, who is he
a. Accepts Christ as Substance of Christianity (totally embraces)The burning center
i. Doctrinally, (scripturally)
ii. The Person –Character-- historical Jesus
iii. The Lord-king and controller of all your life
b. Accepts Christ as the Substance and Sum of the Hope of Man
i. Because we cannot live this life on our own with all these pressures, emptiness of doing it on your own….I CANT DO IT!!
1. The husband, daddy, preacher (I will fail)
2. He is our hope because of Grace we receive this:
a. John 1.11-12 sons
b. Heb. 9.15 Eternal Inheritance
c. Rom 8.17 co heirs of the kingdom
d. Matthew 11.28 rest for our souls
e. Hebrews 7.25 security of salvation
c. Sufficient unto sanctification
i. When we walk in Him as the Truth, the Way, and the Life, changes are made able to Glorify God.
ii. All of our Strength, guidance, motives ARE to be found in Him.
iii. His grace is all we need. When all things leave you in this life His Grace is sufficient. It will get us through.
II. Built on Truth –this truth is Jesus. He is the Lord,
a. Act of Rooting
i. Past act. It was done once and for all at regeneration. “The tree may shake at the top most branches, but its roots are firm because of the earth” the firmness is Christ. Psalm 1 talks of the man who heeds to the word is like a tree…
b. Process of Building (illustration –the church…..)
i. The foundation that upholds, the roof that shelters and covers, the mortar that hold it together, the water that sustains, the electricity that gives power.
ii. Process- once again he is faithful to finish what he has started in you
c. Confirmation of Faith
i. We are established….just like the metal rebar that goes into the concrete as bracing strengthens the building our faith is confirmed by what he is doing inour life. Allowing us to continue to be built upon and fully trust him!

III. Abounds in Praise
We have fallen asleep Wake up put on strength and praise him..Oh how we must praise our God. Not just give lip service, but true praise (abundant praise life filled praise God Glorified, Christ Centered, Bible Saturated, unquenchable praise!!!!!!!! Let us not focus on the negative, let us proclaim the Lord. The Lord longs to hear His Name made Renown and Glorified!!! Christ is not valued unless he is valued above all-Augustine
a. For his Grace (the called are the chosen, the sinners and thieves, but from the ashes come the song of the redeemed)
i. Salvation, awakened to sin, deliverance
b. For his Blessings
i. Remedy for sin
ii. Forgiveness of debt
iii. Coming again
iv. Amazing perfect love, incomparable
v. That he accepts the broken, beat, worthless, wounded, weak, sinners
c. For Him
i. Oh let us fall on our faces at his feet and worship the Lamb that was slain for the sins of fallen man. He is the one saved, the one who forgave
d. Glorifies God
e. Fulfills man
f. Keeps you accountable
g. It displays our relationship with Christ.
Conclusion
Are you rooted? This all starts with being reborn. Made anew by the work of Christ. Christ saves sinners, allowing us to have a relationship with God. Freeing us from guilt and shame and sin. When God saves us he starts a work in our lives that he will complete.
Christian are you relying upon your own strength to be the husband, wife, daddy, mother, son, daughter –don’t depend on your own strength. Live in his GRACE , BUILD on truth….
God deserves our praise….with all we have… how he made you…is he getting it…do you abound in praise. We have so much to be thankful for!!

John the Baptist

John the Baptist is one of the most interesting characters in scripture. We first here of the one crying in the wilderness in Isaiah. Then we meet his parents Elizabeth and Zechariah. These two old Messianic Jews were used by God to raise a mighty man of God. In Luke 1.67-79 we read a poem that was prophetic in every word. John's daddy sings a song over his son, telling what he would be in the eyes of God. John grew and becomes strong in the spirit and goes to the wilderness. John was unique...in his appearance and in his message. There is no doubt he looked different than most religious folks of the day. He was wearing a camel hair jacket for crying out loud. Not to mention his preferred food (locusts...grasshopper like creature). But his message is what stands out. It was a message of repentance and turning from sin.......Notice his humbleness how he centered himself around the Christ.

We as called men of God should stand with the preachers of old. Like John we need to be the voice who cries in our wilderness. A cry for repentance, for preparation. May we too be humble and center ourselves around the Lamb of God.

The Doctrine of Revelation
Knowing God is the most important thing in life. God created people fundamentally for a relationship with himself. The relationship depends on knowing who he is as he has revealed himself. God is personal, which means he has a mind, will, emotions, relational ability and self consciousness. Because he is personal, and not merely an impersonal object, God must personally reveal himself to us. He has done this in what is called a general revelation (the World) and special revelation (the Word of God).
General Revelation
Revelation of God given to all people at all times. This revelation is found both in the external creation (Psalm 19.1) and in the internal human experience. (Romans 1.19-20)
General Revelation shows the attributes of God. His existence, power, creativity, and wisdom; in addition, the testimony of human conscience also provides evidence of God’s moral standards to all human beings. ((Romans 2.14-15) This means from the general revelation all people have some knowledge that God exists, some knowledge oof his character, and some knowledge of his moral standards. So we have from this a awareness of Guilt before God as all people instinctively know we have not meet his requirements. Many world religions have been invented to soothe the sense of their guilt.
General Revelation does not provide knowledge of the true solution to man’s guilt before God: The forgiveness of sins that comes through Jesus Christ. GR does not provide personal knowledge of God as a loving father who redeems his children and establishes covenants with them. For this we need something more we need a special revelation, which God has providentially provided in the Bible
Elements of the Special Revelation
What is the Word of God? Emma said, “The Bible the book of Jesus, it’s the good sword, it is the mighty sword. The Bible says that we are sinners.”
Special Revelation; The Bible is God’s written revelation of who he is and what he has done in redemptive history. Humans need this divine, transcendent perspective in order to break out of their subjective, culturally bond, fallen limitations. Through God’s written Word, his people may overcome error, grow in sanctification, minister effectively to others and live abundant lives as God intends.

God's Promise and Providence

Exodus…for the next few weeks we will be studying the book of Exodus. We plan on seeing the Promise and Providence of God through the book of Exodus. We will see God’s promise reveled to his people. We will see how God is in control of all situations and will receive the Glory due him. Please be reading ahead to get a grasp of all we will be studying. Come with good ideas a questions to bring the group.

Lesson One : Introduction…God’s Promise and Providence
Exodus 1.1-7
In these verses we read of names of those who had made it to Israel. This section of scripture links the book of Genesis with the book of Exodus. The text ends by telling the reader that the children of Israel were fruitful and multiplied. We see God’s hand on his people as they go through this time in their history. Now we must understand that they were not yet in the promised land. God had not forgot them but was preparing them for what was to come.
I. Faithful
We must understand that God had not forgotten his people. The same promise that was begun with Abraham would be carried out. What God starts he finishes. Many people don’t realize this Truth. Even in our own lives we tend to think that God has forgot about us but he is still preparing us for what is in store. We see that these people we growing in number and in strength. God knew what he was doing. He was giving his people what hey needed in order for them to go where they needed. Do you think it is the same in our life? Does God prepare us for what lies ahead? How can we know that God will complete what he starts in us?
II. Purposeful
Notice that God had a purpose in mind. Generally it was to get the Glory through redeemed people but on a smaller scale it was to do mighty things with his people so they could make God look good. God has a purpose for all things. He is totally in control of every situation. What are some ways that God worked his purpose through these people? When bad things happen is God in control of all things? What is His purpose for you? How do you think you will personally accomplish this goal?
III. Powerful
Finally in these introductory verses we see a powerful God. We see how he uses situations of man to accomplish his will. Men, politicians, governments and other entities have nothing on God. Psalm 2 says that God sees the plans of man and laughs…. In what ways do you see his power on display? (taking refugees and making them mighty) Do you think God displays his power today like he did in these times? What can your generation learn form these verses?

Me and Emma at the David Crowder*Band Concert...she and I had an Awesome daddy, daughter night (the crowder band is emma's favorite haha she says that she is going to have a David Crowder themed birthday party!!)

In book of I Timothy vs 1-3a some amazing traits about Paul's life can be found. This letter was written to a young pastor named Timothy. The books of I and II Timothy a full of wonderful practical principles that are vital to the Christ follower. In these opening verses we see why Paul was So Alive. Now it does not say that word for word, but Paul does say some things that point to that.

Notice in vs1 we see that Paul knew who he was....He was an apostle. The Greek for this points to that fact that Paul was a messenger, commisioned by God, to reperesent CHrist and His Work. This meant something to Paul, because of who he was before Christ. God in his mereciful will saved a man who was against him. We also should never get over who we are in Christ. We also are sinners against God. We are unholy and deserve Hell. But what Grace and mercy that has been displayed upon on wretched lives. Paul was So alive because of the one who had given him a life to truly live.

Notice Paul's hope in verse one....Paul had a hope that was expectant on Christ. This is also important to being Alive inn Christ. Because without hope....without biblical hope how can we live in a world like the one we live.....Paul knew where his hope was. He placed it all in the hand of the Lord.

And lastly Paul knew what he was doing...Paul had a ministry. Paul invested his life in people, so that they would Glorify God in all they did. Paul said in Colossians that his goal was to present all believers to God, mature and strong in Christ. Paul knew what he was doing... Notice how in verse three he lets us know that there is a past with Timothy. When we look at the book of Acts and the other Gospels we see that Paul was discipling young Timothy in the way of the Lord....this is important for us to apply..we must have people in our life whom we teach and admonish in the scriptures and thhe ways of God....Paul was SO ALIVE!!!

Paul lived his life to the fullest for Christ....Paul did not waste His LIFE!!!!!!!! Let us live as Paul did........SO ALIVE!!!

Are you a soldier? In Ephesians 6 Paul encourages the church to be a convenant soldier.

I. Stout hearted (vs10)Eph 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his mightIn this section of scripture Paul tells the Christian to be strong in the Lord. Soldiers should be ready to fight, to serve, and to suffer. A soldier’s armor is useless if his heart is weak. Through out this scripture we are told to stand, another word for this is covenant. This means we must be committed to the cause to be able to stand our ground. (Tom Petty’s "stand my ground") (what are some ways we can prepare to be the soldier God wants us to be? Where does our strength come from? How can we access it)II. Strong Opponent (vs12)Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firmIf we are soldiers, we must have an adversary. Our enemy who we fight is Satan. He his a liar, and a deceiver. He uses people, evil spirits, sin, principles, and other things to battle with. He is strong and capable. Many people and many preachers have said they would like to fight Satan. On your own strength or feelings this would be very foolish. We must realize that this opponent is strong and fierce. Knowing this should intensify the convent. It should make it real. It should inform us. (What types of weapons does Satan use against us? Why should we be informed about the enemy?)III. Well Armored (vs11, vs13-18)Eph 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,Paul now talks about the armor of the soldier. Notice the first item in the soldier’s gear sit the belt of truth. Truth hold it all together. If we are to be all we can for Christ we must be held together with truth. The breastplate of Righteousness is next. This covers the heart. The heart can deceive you and satan uses the heart to make the Christian do many foolish things. Look at Sampson……(give examples if needed). Faith is next and Paul compares it to a shelid. (what are some things a shield is used for? How does this compare with our faith in Christ?) Salvation is used to protect our minds and our head. Salvation is our helmet. And finally we have the sword of the spirit which is the word of God. (How does salvation protect our minds? Why is the word or sword our only method of Offense?) Prayer is mentioned last (Why do you think its mentioned as part of the armor?)

He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Mercy and God's Pleasure

This week at Woodland we have been have a spiritual awakening conference. Dr. Tom Hayes of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute has been bringing the messages this week. I have been inspired, broken, changed, and challenged through these messages. I am once again amazed that God saves sinners.....

When we look into scriptures we see so many pictures of God's Grace. Let us look in Luke chapter 23

In this chapter and in verse 39 we see the story of Jesus being crucified and the criminals that were being put to death with him.

The first criminal is responds as the rest to Jesus. But the second one understands three things during the Crucifixion of Christ.

First of all he understands
God's Holiness..... In verse 40 the second criminal rebukes the first for what he said to Christ. He asks him if he fears God. He know whither through the events that took place or some other time in his life that God is to be feared. Because of God's justice, and holiness God should be feared. This is important because if we do not see who God truly is how can we see who we truly are.

Secondly he understands
His Sinfulness.....Notice also in verse 41 how he tells the first criminal that they deserve their punishment. Through a correct view of God, this sinner sees his sin. He understands who he is and what he deserves. When we see God in all his Glory and grasp who he truly is we will see and understand our need. Because of God's perfection and holiness we are separated from him because of our sinfulness. This is all of us...This thief saw his need and saw the purity of Christ.

Thirdly he understands
Mercy of God...behold how Jesus responds to this man's third statement in verse 42. Oh how beautiful mercy and grace are. Those piercing eyes of Christ peer at the criminal and with mercy he reveals the criminals new home. Salvation is that simple. Because of God the man was awakened to his need for a savior, and Jesus saved him.....simple, awesome amazing.....

Dealing with the World

Colossians 4.5-6
I. Limited Time
We are only on this earth for a limited time. God has numbered our days and selected our paths. Knowing this, Paul makes known a principle that we should be aware of when dealing with the world. Our life is but a vapor and then its gone. Our sole purpose in life is to Glorify God. We will glorify God when we make the best use of our time. This should be done in all aspects of life, as well as our relationships with non- Christ Followers. This is important because obviously we don’t live alone here on earth. There are others with us. God has chosen us as tools to spread his message. The Good news….the GOSPEL. DO you think that we do realize our limited time as Christians? And if we do, why don’t we live like it? Why do you think Paul tells them of their limited time? Do you make the best use of your time?
II. Wise Walk
Walking wisely is vital when dealing with the world. We must be on our guard. We must also live intentionally or on purpose. There are so many obstacles that may derail us in our walk with Christ. And when a “derailing” occurs the world notices. Not only that, but we have been giving a privilege to share and be a witness of the Glories of God. A wise believer will walk with purpose, intentions, and with a focus. Wisdom is using the knowledge that we have gained from the Word. Its living out the word. Its putting legs on prayers. James talks about it….its faith being put into good works. Describe a situation where wisdom is needed in our dealing with the world? Why should we worry about having a wise walk?
III. Seasoned Speech
Many times our tongues can get us in a heap of steamy trouble! Especially when dealing with the world. We can get hurt or offended and we will then speak our minds! This is wrong. Paul urges us to have grace seasoned in our speech. This allows us to be more like Christ. When we depend upon our wisdom our speech becomes hurtful and malignant. When we disagree with the world and our feelings or pride is on the line we must exercise grace. It is said in the Bible to be quick to hear, and slow to anger. Give Grace to those who need it most. Has there ever been a time where you did not have grace in your speech? Why do you think that Paul mentions this in this text? How does it apply to you directly?
IV. The Outsider
Paul mentions the outsider and the person whom we answer in these texts. We must remember our job. Just as you and I need a savior, so does this world. When dealing with the world we need to stop and recognize that the only difference between us and them is the grace of God. Many of us are unwise with our dealings with the outsider. This can be hurtful to the non-believer. There are many legalistic men and women in this world who do not use these truths in their conduct with the world. When we fall into this trap, we become legalistic, and ignorant to the things of God. How are we to deal with this lost world? What can we do to be intentional in our relationships with those who are not believers? What do you see as the biggest problem in the way Christians deal with the world? Do you think that we can be to friendly with the world? And if so when does that happen?

Instructions in prayer
Colossians 4.2-4
Prayer should come natural for the believer. But we make it a chore. This privilege that we have been given through the gospel is taken for granted daily. We have opportunity to converse and share with the living God. The one who created the world, want us to come to him in prayer. Notice Paul’s instructions to the Colossians.
I. Intentional Prayer
Prayer for us is something that we do as a habit or good thing. But prayer is of vast importance. Notice how exact Paul’s instructions are. We are told to continue in prayer in a steadfast way. How is this? What do you think Paul is suggesting right here? This statement calls for commitment. Paul instructs us to be committed to a consistent prayer life. Our prayers should be focused. Paul tells us to be watchful. This all boils down to having a purpose in our prayers. How can our prayers be committed prayers? What does being watchful (vs2) mean? What is the importance of a committed prayer life? What are some steps we can take to develop an intentional prayer life?

II. Intercessory Prayer
Paul now turns his attention on some instructions in praying for others. Our prayers are usually like a list to Santa. We should petition God to bless those in our lives. Paul seeks out prayers for those in his party. Paul challenges these people to pray about the furthering of the Gospel. When was the last time we earnestly prayed about the furthering of the Gospel? Honestly are our prayers focused on the Christ and His message? Why do prayer for people who are physically sick, but not spiritually sick? Paul ends by asking for prayer for himself. He asks that he may be clear in his presentation of the Gospel. Paul here realizes his weakness and his need of strength when dealing with such intense things as the Gospel.

Psa 127:1 A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
Psa 127:2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.
Psa 127:3 Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.
Psa 127:4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth.
Psa 127:5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

This text reminds me of my home and family. It is comforting to know that God is the builder and watcher of my life, my family and my home. I take in joy in understanding that we are in God's hands...yes he is that big!!! As Hebrews chapter one states, " he upholds the universe by the word of his power. " He holds it ALL together. He does all this by His WORD. That is awesome to know.

But I chose Psalm 127 today because of the blessing my wife and I will receive in a few months. Lord willing, we will be blessed with a new "arrow". Children are a blessing, gift, and an inheritance from the Lord.

I thank him for his grace and magnificant blessings!

Whatever you do....Colossians 3.18-25

There is no doubt that in the day in which we live we need some direction in the way we conduct ourselves with others. Paul gives us some details on how we can do this. He begins by talking of the home. He addresses wives, husbands, children, and fathers. These details are vital in the development of a family that Glorifies the Lord. Wives are told to submit to their husbands because it shows obedience to the Lord. Husbands are told to be tender to their wives, children are told to obey parents in order to please the Lord. Fathers are given advice on raising kids. And we even have some details given to slaves or workers. But all of these point top serving others, denying our wants and needs, and pleasing the Lord.
Today’s family does everything but glorify God. The fact of the matter is that when we lift up and serve others we are serving and glorifying God. This is God’s plan. We see the example in the Bible through the life of Jesus Christ. He came as a servant. He lead with his service. Oh the wonders he did….never for himself always for others, always to Glorify GOD. So it brings us to the closing statement in chapter 3 which will be our focus tonight. Notice verses 23-25.

We are given a clear picture of what a life that Glorifies God looks like. Notice how Paul generalizes this in verse 23 by using the phrase “whatever you do”
I. Whatever you do….
This covers everything. From relationships with family, friends, church members, coworkers, students, all people. This covers our dealings in our finances, and how we pay our bills, how raise our kids, how we treat our parents, how play sports, take tests, do chores, our job performance all these things ride on the statement “whatever you do”. How can we glorify God in everything we do? What must happen in an individuals life in order for him to glorify God? Do you think that pleasure and enjoyment are found in living a life that glorifies God? Why?
II. What you must do…
We must come to the realization of what we must do as people who follow Christ. We are to glorify God with our bodies. We are a sacrifice sealed to work for him. We are to give up our wants and do everything as if it were for God. Because it is for God. When we do a test at school you are doing for the Lord. When you mow the grass you are doing it for the Lord. When you wash the dishes you are doing it for the Lord. Every action you do it as hard as you can and do it for the Lord. Not to pleas people but to please God. All things that you and I doe are a reflection of what our relationship in God looks like. We need to live our lives as if they were worth dying for. How can we accomplish this task? What are some barriers to thinking this way? Why do most “Christians” not follow what Paul tells us to do here? What can we do to promote this type of thinking in our church?
III. Who You Are…
When we were bought by the blood of Jesus, we became his. We are no longer our own. We must depend upon his strength his integrity, his grace, his wisdom, and all of who Jesus is. We are now his servant. When we do anything in life it we are serving him. Oh how we need to embrace this type of thinking. Can you imagine what we would see in the lives of people if we all lived like servants. What is a servant? Do we have a right to mistreat some one if they have mistreated us? What are some ways a servant pleases his master? How can we be the servants that Christ wants us to be?

God's Desire for our minds

Why God wants you to have a free mind
Colossians 2.13-15
God truly desires for you and I to have a free mind. Through these three elements, we can see why God wants our minds to be free.

I. Alive through Him (vs13)
Jesus through his death and resurrection, and our embracing of His atonement (sacrifice) we are made truly alive. You see Jesus did not come to this world to make unhappy people happy, or to make non-religious people religious. He came to make dead people live…..This only happens through Christ. We can’t jump start ourselves into new life, or depend on another to give us new life. This is why we should beware and escape the bondages that our minds can be caught in. We have new life we do not have to be caught up in the things of this world that can hold our minds captive. Yes we were once dead in our sins not experiencing true life now we can. What does it mean to be alive in Christ? Why are we “dead” without Him?
II. Legal Pardon (vs14)
Legally in God’s eyes we are condemned. Because of our sin and unrighteousness charges have been brought up against us. Praise God For Jesus. You see Jesus saw the charges, the crimes, and the punishment. He paid the debt which satisfied God’s demands, he accepted the punishment which satisfied God’s justice. Look what he did in our lives. He came and did all this so that we may be free. We will never experience true freedom unless we allow our minds to be free. This is why God wants our minds to be free…we have been pardoned from the legal demands of sin…we are free…no more guilt…It is all because of the cross!!!!!! Why would the Guilt of sin hold our lives captive? Do you think that some people let their Guilt hold them back for living for God? How has the Guilt of sin affected your life for Christ?
III. Supreme Authority (vs15)
God has set Jesus above all things including governments and authorities as well as satanic authorities. He is supreme because of who he is and what he has done. He disarmed Satan and the workers of iniquities. Satan no longer has a foothold on your mind. Christ has freed you from his grasps. He has openly put them to shame and destroyed his deceptions. This is why we should live with free minds. God wants you to have a free mind because off whom Christ defeated. Even in the Garden of Eden where it all began, Satan was in the middle of deceiving and imprisoning our minds. But thanks be to God for his son Jesus and his work. Through Satan’s defeat we can have free lives and minds. How did Satan deceive the minds of Adam and Eve? Why is important that this defeat happened? Do you think Satan wants our minds captive? Why?

Hot and Cold and the End of All Things...

Well today an Arctic blast is moving across our area of WNC. Snow and temperatures have fallen in some regions. This winter so far has been a roller coaster. Warm one day Cold the next.

I notice that my life with Christ is very similar. Hot or Cold. Some days I am on fire, and others I am not. It is not that my desire to live Holy leaves or my want to live for God fades.Many times I would like to attribute these fluctuations to outside circumstances, but I cant blame it on anything but my on depravity.

It turns out I have a problem with a humanist. This person believes that the end of all things is man's happiness. This person wants himself lifted up. All others seem to come second or even third in his priorities. This person is me.........in fact we are all this way. God, let us be as Paul and desire to know the fellowship of Christ's sufferings. What wretched, weak, life wasting people we are.

Suffering is foreign concept to most Christians. We think we suffered if we came to church on a cold wet night. We love pride. We even worship it. We do not want to cause a scene or a disturbance even if it means furthering the Gospel. We are our own problems. WE ARE WASTING OUR LIVES!!!!!!! What is your life goiong to mean at the end. What will you and I have to offer at Jesus' feet? Will it be our pride, popularity, our money and riches, our education, our Jobs? Will we lay our boats, campers, 401(K)s, cd's, bonds, houses, time share? Will these matter in the end??? NO!!!

May we lay down the sufferings we went through on Earth at Christ's feet. May we lay down changed lives, fixed homes, souls of saints,, songs of praise, shouts of victory all for HIS GLORY!!! MAY WE LIVE FOR HIS GLORY!!!

Glorifying God is our purpose in life. It should be displayed in all avenues and area of life. Our reactions and relationships with authorities are direct views of how we feel about glorifying God.

I Peter 2.13-25
13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 2:14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. We are to Glorify God in our public life.

I. Submission vs13-15

As said above we are be in submission to the authorities because it is the will of God. The American Christian says no to this...he even links with those who may help him obtain rights that the Christian "needs". We are to submit. When we rebel it is a reflection of our poor relationship with God. This trickles down to every level of authority, from presidents, police, preachers, and parents. Submission is also a witness to a lost world. Submission is also our calling. Verses 13-15 display the principle of submission profoundly.

II. Freedom vs 16-17

Now freedom is something we can talk about right? We all want to be free. As Christ followers do we live in freedom? Or freedom can and should Glorify God. Many of us live in the world of legalism. Living by a set of rules that govern our every move. Yet many also live in a state of liberalism. These folks use the grace of God as a "go ahead" to do and live as you want. Holiness is not important in liberalism. So many of us live in one of these two. We must live as FREE people. This means that our freedom is from God and his grace not form OUR rules. Yet free people are not bound to proving their freedom by lascivious living. We are free to Glorify HIS Name. We are not bound to sin, death, darkness. But we have been awakened by this marvelous light. FLEE the chains Christian...Glorify God with your freedom.

III. Suffering vs18-25

Suffering is done through service to others. This verse makes concrete that our rights are a blessing not a need. Even in hard times SERVE. Suffering happens through sorrows. When we face sorrows for Christ this suffering Glorifies HIM. As Paul said may we know the fellowship of his sufferings. Oh how we dodge suffering to be comfortable.....notice the account of Christ suffering in this text...did HE dodge it...did he look for revenge..did take the sword...no he was like a LAMB Lead to the slaughter. Through his sufferings Christ Glorified God like no other ever has or ever will. Now may we accept our sufferings so that we may Glorify our father.

Don't waste your life on the rotten corrupted world. Do not let the system of corruption infiltrate your life and drown your life. Oh dear brothers and sisters may we engage our life and bring him Glory!!!!!!! HE is Worthy HE is worthy he is worthy...THE SINGS MY SOUL, MY SAVIOR GOD TO THEE...HOW GREAT THOU ART, HOW GREAT THOU ART.

what is revival? Is it a set of religious meetings, or is it a movement, maybe a feeling.....who knows?

Many times we can get bogged down with the ins and outs, daily pressures, emergencies, and general chaos that happens in life. These things can easily stress us and damage our relationships, or even add to our the stress of our daily grind. When it comes to our relationship with God, this can be just one more pressure added to our plate.....

Our purpose in life is to Glorify God with our entire being. We are to bloom where we are planted.

How can we when we live in a time such as this. There are wars, famine, financial crisis, and many uncertainties the we MUST deal with. How can revival be had, how can we bloom for God?

The answer is found in the Word of God. II Timothy 3.16-17

2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
2Ti 3:17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

The answer is the Word of God.

The word of God is provided so that we may know how to live and function in this world. If we want to be taught, corrected, trained, competent, joyful, and equipped in this life we must immerse ourselves in the WORD of GOD.

REVIVAL will be experienced when the Christian takes the time to be in the WORD of GOD.

Then and only then will revival be experienced once again.

MAY THE LAMB THAT WAS SLAIN, RECEIVE THE REWARD OF HIS SUFFERING!

This is a part of a sermon by Paris Reidhead call "Ten Shekels and a Shirt". What motivates our lives? What motivates our Christianity? Is the happiness of man the end of all things or is it the Glory of God. We are so ingrained by bad theology that the church of Christ has become utilitarian. Meaning that we use God as a means to get our happiness. This story illustrates the opposite of humanism and the utilitarian. These two men became mission with God to bring Christ Glory with their lives.

Two young Moravians heard of an island in the West Indies where an atheist British owner had 2000 to 3000 slaves. And the owner had said, "No preacher, no clergyman, will ever stay on this island. If he’s shipwrecked we’ll keep him in a separate house until he has to leave; but he’s never going to talk to any of us about God. I’m through with all that nonsense." Three thousand salves from the jungles of Africa brought to an island in the Atlantic and there to live and die without hearing of Christ.Two young Moravians heard about it. They sold themselves to the British planter and used the money they received from their sale, for he paid no more than he would for any slave, to pay their passage out to his island for he wouldn’t even transport them. As the ship left it’s pier in the river at Hamburg and was going out into the North Sea, carried with the tide, the Moravians had come from Herrenhut to see these two lads off, in their early twenties. Never to return again, for this wasn’t a four year term; they sold themselves into life-time slavery. Simply that as slaves, they could be a s Christians where these others were. The families were there weeping, for they knew they would never see them again. And they wondered why they were going and questioned the wisdom of it. As the gap widened and the housings had been cast off and were being curled up there on the pier, and the young boys saw the widening gap, one lad with his arm liked through the arm of his fellow, raised his hand and shouted across the gap the last words that were heard from them, they were these: "MAY THE LAMB THAT WAS SLAIN, RECEIVE THE REWARD OF HIS SUFFERING!" This became the call of Moravian missions. And this is the only reason for being, That the Lamb that was slain, may receive the reward of His suffering.

Buck Stoves and Other stuff

The stove is now in the house, thanks to the help of my buddy Shane. We have not used any propane heat in about three days. The savings should be substantial. I have burnt myself about thirty times putting in wood. The hardest part is getting the stove regulated. It is very sensitive and efficient, thus you can overheat the house very easily. Beth and I are very pleased with the stove. I have enjoyed a few great cups of coffee around the fire already and I look forward to many more. Here is a picture of what I put in. I will have actual photos of the stove in my house soon.

On a more spiritual note........

So this is christmas, and we are in the "spirit" of giving. Or is is the spirit of spending? Well whatever the case they are both wrong. Christmas is about the creator of the universe, the LORD of lords and the KING of Kings leaving his throne for a womb, leaving the womb for a manger, and the leaving the manger for the cross. Christ became a man to die for men. He became sin so that we could be forgiven. He took the punishiment of a just God so that I wouuld be reconciled. Christmas is the Gospel.

Colossians 1.21-23
I. Condition of Depravity
a. Alienated-non participate of Grace, estranged, under the law and prisoned by sin
b. Bent toward sin- mind is swayed to sin
c. Contaminated actions
This wake-up call is for Christians a reminder of their once depraved condition. It goes into a detailed description of our depravity. It should sober us to our true condition without Christ. We must realize that we were totally estranged, sin sick, and our actions are contaminated with our depravity. Can you describe how are sinfulness alienates us from God? How are our actions contaminated by sin?
II. Cost of Reconciliation
a. Humanity—(Christmas’s importance)
b. Brutality- death, crucifixion sacrifice
c. Fidelity- faithful, sacrificial
Here we have the cost of reconciliation that Christ purchased for us. Man sinned, man must atone for sin. This is why Christ had to become a man and die. You see,sense we were depraved we could not atone for our sins. Even if we were given the opportunity to save ourselves on the cross it would not be enough!!! It is impossible to save yourself. Christ suffered for us, in place of us, for the Glory of God. (key in on this section) What does this mean to you? How can we live a life worthy of his sacrifice?
III. Call to Accountability –life doesn’t stop at salvation
a. Foundation (stability)
b. Steadfast-unmovable, unshakable
c. Hope- finding your pleasure in Him
Paul ends by letting them Know that life doesn’t stop at salvation. You see, we are to continue on in the faith. Salvation is not insurance from hell, it is a life, it continues. We should be founded in the faith, or stable. This means that we should build our life on the Word of God. Our life should be unshakable and unmovable. We are called to live with our hope totally in him. Would you say that you are unshakable when it comes to your relationship with Christ? Why do we seem to put our hope in the wrong things? What does an unshakable life look like?

Wood Heat!

So....in these trying times my wife and I have decided to try and save some money by adding another source of heat to our house. We currently have propane. The cost of propane is a record highs and is very trying on our budget. Since our house has an old buck stove that is unusable due to a crack in the firebox and bad ventilation in the chimney. We have decided to replace the wood stove and repair the chimney. Wood heat is cheap and very effective. We have obtained two chain saws to cut the wood provided by the wind on my papaw's farm. We will be documenting this process on this blog as well as other happenings on the mountain.

Well its been a while since my last post...I have been going through the book of Colossians in my personal devotion time. Through this study I have seen how important it is to have your mind founded in the truth of the Gospel. Now this is not a prosperity Gospel or another fales beleif. This Gospel produces joy, love, love, disicpline, sacrafice, holiness. There is a battle of the mind going on in our world today. Even the church has been under attack. The emmergant church and the seeker sensitve movement are all signs of the war that is being waged in the church of Chirst. The world has influenced the chruch in ways it has never been before. Now this influence is not nessessarly a physical one or one of preference. This influence is a doctrinal issue. Mnay Churches have chosen to be abiguous on such issues as; inerency of scripture, holiness, depravity of man, and supremacy of Christ. We must know the truth. There are absolutes. When will we stop being influencd!!!!! One drop of sewage defiles the hole bottle of water.

Colossae was a region that was under may influences. It truly could be compared to the state of our world in which we live. The Colossians were under the influence. Paul had set his mind on making sure these people of Colossae understood they needed to have their minds rooted in the Lord.
In this lesson we will talk about influence.
The Colossians were under heavy influence. This can be seen when you get the Back ground of the region of Colossae. By understanding these characters in which Paul addressed we can get an idea of the Influence the Colossians were under.
Under the Influence: Introduction to Colossians
I. False Prophets/ Doctrines
a. Holiness

The Colossians were under many types of influence. One reason is because of the false prophets and the doctrines that they were speaking. The prophets had false ideas concerning holiness. In your opinion what does holiness mean to you? They also taught a wrong doctrine concerning Christ. Paul pays much attention in the letter to the Colossians to the Lordship of Christ. Why do you think that having the wrong view of Christ could lead you down the wrong road?
II. Ignorant believers
a. Prejudices
b. Unlearned of Holy Spirit and the Things of Christ
Some of the believers at Colossae were very young in the faith, many held on to the old Jewish laws of eating and drinking. These believers did not understand the ways of Christ and the Holy Spirit. Tradition was more important to these people than the things of Christ. First of all can someone describe tradition? Tradition is okay, when put before Christ it becomes legalism. How can tradition get in our way as believers?
III. Arrogant Philosophers
a. Greece (pagan, and humanistic)
b. Orient (new age)
Finally the most dangerous influencers of the Colossians were the arrogant philosophers. The men and women ranged in scale from free thinkers to non-thinkers. Greece was a hot bed for pagan thought and practice. Many Greeks had their own personal gods that portrayed a lifestyle the particular person adhered to. For example most warriors worshiped the god Hermes. Hermes was the god of war. This posed a great problem to the Colossians. Also there were many free thinkers, whose thought where surrounded in humanism. Humanism puts man and his happiness above all things, as the center of the universe. In God’s eyes this is idolatry. There were also influences from the eastern religions and philosophies. Which New Age comes from. This is religions like Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and many others. This is also where Gnosticism and Agnostics come from. Now we could study these religion and philosophies forever. To simplify their falsehood comes from the placement of Christ. He is not considered Lord and King in any of these beliefs. Ask—How do you think these beliefs could influence a young believer? What kind of dangers do these beliefs bring in today’s world?

Cultural Christianity will tell you that the greatest thing in life is salvation. Salvation is an amazing miracle that shows the grace of mercy of God, but it is one of the blessings of God. The Art of Suffering

Suffering was an everyday occurrence for the New Testament believers. The Apostle Peter writes to these believers in the letter of I Peter. He writes to encourage and give hope to these people who suffered for the Lord. How do we suffer? Peter says that we have been called to suffer….called to die to our sin. Christ is our example he bore on sins in HIS body on a tree. We are to die to sin and live to righteousness. Many times we suffer for the Glory of God in fact Peter says that we should not be surprised when we go through fiery trials, WE ARE TO REJOICE when we are going through trials, because we are sharing in Christ’s Sufferings.

1:1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus
The Identity
We see that in this text, as well as all the other texts that Paul has written, that he identifies himself and Timothy. He does not use code, or secret language he openly tells all who he is. This is the same Paul that was with you when you first came to know the Lord. This is the same Paul whom you ate with, hung out with. This could have brought Paul great persecution, but Paul did not care. You see a true servant is not ashamed of their identity. Notice that Paul did not say, I Paul the Great preacher, or I Paul the mega super star pastor…..No he said I Paul the slave or servant. ( what things do we tend to identify with? Why are their so many Christians who are ashamed of who they are? How can we keep from letting pride swell up in our lives?)

(vs1b) To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons:
The Fellowship
In the next part of the text we see the fellowship. These are the people whom Paul Cared for. From Acts 16 We remember that these people were a cross section of the society they lived in. In other words there were many different people who involved in this church. We see a glimpse of how Paul viewed community. Notice how all is emphasized in these verses. ( What is community to you? What are some ways that we as a group can promote community? When has their been a time that you experienced community?)

(1:2 ) Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Supply
The text shows how Paul’s true feelings for the church. He desired that God would supply them everything that they needed. Christ is our supply. Paul knew that Christ was everything that this church needed. Grace and peace should be the top of every Christian’s wish list. Many people whish for other things like money, prosperity, good insurance, nice houses, cars, etc. As servants grace and peace are all we need. These items must be put into context. ( name some things that we think we need? Where do these thoughts come from? Why are we so easily influenced by our culture? What steps can we take to make Christ our supply?)

Hey Guys,

well Its been a while since my last post it has been very crazy. So to shake things up a bit I thought I would let you see the snake I killed on Tuesday night. He was on his way to my garden. With kids and dogs around this guy had to be exterminated. I usually leave snakes alone and let them go. This case was different. This timber rattler did not make a sound when I approached him. He meant business and was in strike position. He was defiantly a threat. If he had not of been in sight I would have never seen him and probably found him in my garden....one of us had to go! 38" with 8 rattles and 1 button. My little girl and wife now know what a rattle snake looks like. This event reminded me of a what Dr. Thad Dowdle said...."when the fire gets hot, the snakes come out"

I. Well Armored Soldier (vs11, vs13-18)
a. Belt of truth
i. Truth is more than just not telling lies. It is doctrine it is what we believe. The way you live life will be determined what you believe. Truth only comes from Christ. He is the maker and creator of truth. He is truth. This is the root of our strength. Being girded or surrounded by the truth of God will help us to refrain form liberalism and uncertainties. So the Question is this, is our life held together by God’s truth, or are we simply relying on our own version of truth? What are some ways we can wrap our lives in the truth of God?
b. Breastplate of Righteousness
i. We must literally put on the righteousness of Christ. This guard the vital organs and the vulnerable areas of our life. God’s righteousness allows us to boldly go into the heat of battle, because of HIS RIGHTTEOUNESS. We cannot depend upon our own. What are some areas in life when we need God’s righteousness?
c. Gospel of Peace-makes ready
i. Our lives must be prepared by the gospel of peace. This allows our lives to be at peace with God, ourselves, and man. Living with the Gospel of peace will prevent us from falling into the temptation of dishonesty and strife between each other. This peace of armor gives the individual a frame of mind that allows for patience, virtue, and longsuffering for Christ. Notice it prepares us. This means that provision has been made for the time of preparation. In other words time has been spent and made for your relationship with Christ. ( How can we prepare our life with the Gospel of Peace? Why do you think Paul calls it the Gospel of peace?)
d. Shield of Faith, Helmet of Salvation, Sword of the Spirit
i. These three are the final peaces of armor. They are also the most important. In fact Paul says they are the most important (verse 16). Faith is mentioned first. It is compared to a shield. A shield is movable in all directions, able to deflect and defend. Our faith is the same. We should be comfortable with our faith. It should be our own. In the days of the roman and greek soldier shields signified were you were raised, were you lived and whose you were. The soldiers actually painted and decorated their shield sot make it personal. The same goes for our faith. It should be personal our own. ( How can we make our faith our own?) Salvation comes next in the form of a helmet. This speaks of minds. Salvation will protect your mind. You see the way you think of problems will either strengthen you relationship with God or hinder it. When we put all problems, situations, and experiences under the umbrella of Biblical salvation we begin to have a hope. Knowing that God has plan should comfort and protect us during life’s problems. If God had a plan to save you he has a plan for all things. Without putting on the helmet of salvation the devil would have a foothold on our minds. He would create doubt, fear, despair, and suffering. But when we Put on salvation all these troubles are deflected by our salvation in Christ. (How does salvation in Christ ease our mind?) Finally the sword of the spirit. This is the Word of God. The sword is the most effective part of our armor. It is the most versatile of all the pieces of armor. It is able to defend and offend. It was used by Christ against the devil. We must be masters of the word of God. He should be hid in our hearts and close to our hands. We should be quick with it. We also should be familiar with it. As Christians we are very poor with the Word. Many Christians even use it the wrong way. The word will also affect us. It will cause us to grow, and change. (How can we become better with the word of God? What are some ways the word can help us in this life? Why are so many Christian’s poor with the word of God?)

Are you a soldier? In Ephesians 6 Paul encourages the church to be a convenant soldier.

I. Stout hearted (vs10)
Eph 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might
In this section of scripture Paul tells the Christian to be strong in the Lord. Soldiers should be ready to fight, to serve, and to suffer. A soldier’s armor is useless if his heart is weak. Through out this scripture we are told to stand, another word for this is covenant. This means we must be committed to the cause to be able to stand our ground. (Tom Petty’s "stand my ground") (what are some ways we can prepare to be the soldier God wants us to be? Where does our strength come from? How can we access it)

II. Strong Opponent (vs12)
Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm
If we are soldiers, we must have an adversary. Our enemy who we fight is Satan. He his a liar, and a deceiver. He uses people, evil spirits, sin, principles, and other things to battle with. He is strong and capable. Many people and many preachers have said they would like to fight Satan. On your own strength or feelings this would be very foolish. We must realize that this opponent is strong and fierce. Knowing this should intensify the convent. It should make it real. It should inform us. (What types of weapons does Satan use against us? Why should we be informed about the enemy?)

III. Well Armored (vs11, vs13-18)
Eph 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
Paul now talks about the armor of the soldier. Notice the first item in the soldier’s gear sit the belt of truth. Truth hold it all together. If we are to be all we can for Christ we must be held together with truth. The breastplate of Righteousness is next. This covers the heart. The heart can deceive you and satan uses the heart to make the Christian do many foolish things. Look at Sampson……(give examples if needed). Faith is next and Paul compares it to a shelid. (what are some things a shield is used for? How does this compare with our faith in Christ?) Salvation is used to protect our minds and our head. Salvation is our helmet. And finally we have the sword of the spirit which is the word of God. (How does salvation protect our minds? Why is the word or sword our only method of Offense?) Prayer is mentioned last (Why do you think its mentioned as part of the armor?)

I. Private life (vs1-4)
Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother" (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 "that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord

In the final chapter of Ephesians Paul continues his theme of submission by talking about the two sections of life, Public and private. He directs the readers on how to live Publicly and Privately according to the Lord. He begins by talking about our private lives. The Children are called to Obey their parents, mainly because it’s the right thing to do. Now notice that he says to obey them in the Lord, this refers to situations were parents are lost and the children are saved. Notice that this DOES not mean we dishonor or respect them. Verses 1 and 2 clearly point out that it is essential that we honor and respect them. The fathers are called on to encourage the children, and not to provoke them to anger. This can have many implications, but simple put the father has a great influence and impact on the child’s life. Paul then urges the fathers to disciple their children in the ways of the Lord. Notice that the mother is not mentioned here. This does not mean she is left out, but it does mean that the father has the responsibility of discipline in the House. (what are some ways we commonly disobey our parents? Are there time when we should not obey our parents? What are some ways we can Honor our fathers and Mothers? What do you think about the promise made in verse 2? What is the father’s responsibility in the House?)

II. Public life (vs5-9)
Eph 6:5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. 9 Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.
Now we see the way we should live in our Public life. The first people that Paul brings up are the servants. These are people who have any one in authority over them, this is all of us. We are all called to be good servants. Notice how Paul tells them to serve. He urges them to take great care for their performance. He even goes on to tell them that they should do as if they were doing it for Christ! Wow this would really make work a lot better if we did it as we would for Christ. But the the fact of the matter is that we are doing for Christ. This applies to school, work, sports, or anything you do. The Bible says to do all things to the glory of God……all things. This applies to those of us with authority as well. We are called to care for those we have charge over. Now this may or may not apply to you now, but one day it will. Masters are also to realize were their power comes from. All authority comes from the Lord. (Is it hard to do your work or studies as if it were for Christ? Why? Why should we take extra care for how we do our work? How is this a witness for Christ? What are some characteristics of a good servant? What are some characteristics of a good leader or master?)

Truths of a Healthy Home
Ephesians 5.21-33

I. Duties of the Wife
Eph 5:21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands

This is a very touchy subject that Paul deals with in the remainder of Chapter five. He deals specifically with husbands and wives, and their relationships. Notice how verse 21 clarifies. This verse tells us that we should submit to one another out of reverence to Christ. Now this is important because the next verses could be taken as a blow against women. But in this scripture we see how we can literally serve one another. Wives are told by Paul to submit to their husbands. This is a military term were the officer in control receives all responsibility for the actions of the military unit. In other words the man is responsible to God for all action in the House. This is not a command for women to be stupid, or to be a secondary citizen. This text describes how God set up the Household. This also refers to respect. Many men are not what they could be because they may not receiver the respect that they should be receiving. Paul compares the relationship of the Husband and wife to the Relationship of Christ and the Church. Just as the Church respects and submits to God, wives should do the same to the Husbands. Now this does not make the Husbands a type of God or Higher being. God has given husband and wives each jobs. Both are a type of submission. Christ was the Servant leader, men are to be the same way, the Church is Christ’ glorious wife, wives are to be the same way. (Do you think our culture would go along with this? How can we better encourage this type of Thinking? Do you think this would help some of our Homes today? Why?)

II. Duties of the Husband
Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Paul now begins to describe the Husbands duties by comparing him to Christ. This is no doubt are some tough shoes to fill. The husband is more than just a provider, he is the representative of Christ to his family. The first duty is to love. This is not saying I love you, but it is living it. Just as Christ wooed us with his love the Husband is to do the same towards his wife. She should never doubt his love for her. The husband love should be all it could possibly be here on earth. The husband should also sacrifice. This can apply to anything he should just a Christ was sacrificial. The husband should let his wants and even his needs be put back so that his wife’s can be met. This is what Christ did for his church. We see that everything that Christ does glorifies himself, thus he is sanctifying his Church to present it to Himself. In other words, Christ is making, and doing everything he can to make his bride look and feel as beautiful as she can. Husbands are called to do the same thing. (Who do you think has more on them, the husband or the wife? Why are both roles so important? What are some ways the world opposes this?)

Hey ,so what characterises your life?......what marks your life?...............what are you known for? Well the Bible calls us to be different, separated, and yes..holiness. It does not call us to perfection but we should all strive to produce fruit. So are you a child of the light.

Children of the Light
Ephesians 5.8-16
I. Obedience (vs9-10)
Eph 5:8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.

In this text Paul tells us that we are children of the light. He gives us some elements of the Children of the Light. The first main element that Paul talks about is the element of Obedience. We are to look at our life and give ourselves an exam and see if we line up with God’s word. Does our life have resemblance of His Word? Or is our life one that is plagued with sin and destruction that is not characteristic of a faithful believer. God also wants us to be separated. He wants us to be set apart and different. ( Why is it so hard to be obedient to God? What are some ways we should be separated from the world?)
II. Discipleship (vs11b-14)
Eph 5:11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 4 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

In the next part we see Paul talking about Discipleship. This is the tough part of being a Christian comes in. Paul tells us that our life should reflect the Lord. Our life should expose other’s sins. Sometimes this can be hard but God expects us to reflect him. You see there are those in our world who are truly living dead. These people have no hope or any type of life. When we reflect God we show the people around us hope and true life. (How do our lives reflect God’s truth? Why is discipleship so hard? What are some ways we can show true life?)

III. Stewardship (vs15-16)
Eph 5:15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
The next element Paul talks about, is the element of Stewardship. God gave us all a life, its what we do with it that matters most. We should be careful in all things we do, because there are always consequences that we must face. We also are accountable for our time. Everyday we are given by God to do something for him. (Why do students your age have such a hard time with stewardship? What are some ways we can give God the time he deserves? What can we do to make sure that God has every part of our life?)

Hey Guys....if there is one thing that is lacking in our life today, it would be authenticity. There are no authentic people anymore. So many of us live lies. So many believers live lies. This problem makes Christians look shallow and ignorant. We need authentic people. In Ephesians we truly see a picture of an Authentic Believer.

Characteristics of an Authentic Believer
Ephesians 5.3-8a
I. Purity of Life (vs3-4)

Eph 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.

In chapter five we see Paul making a move into the practical life of the believer. He tells the reader how to live. But as he goes through the chapter we see now some characteristics of a True Believer. The first characteristic is the Believers purity. We are called to live pure lives, not to impress others or even to make others feel uncomfortable. God gives us directions and boundaries for us. These directions found in His word help us to live, to have joy, and peace. Paul calls the Christian to have physical purity. He begins talking about sexual immorality and how it can affect our life. To be all that God wants us to be, we must seek purity. This is for our own good. Even secular studies have indicated that sexual immorality causes deep and emotional stress in people’s lives. Not only does Paul mention physical purity, he also talks about mental and speech purity. These issues that rise up in this text are no doubt problems we all are facing or are going to face. The cure is simple….flee. We are to flee impurity at what ever the cost. (Why do you think purity is such a big issue in the Christian’s life? Do you find it hard to think and talk about the “right” things? What are some ways that impurity can hurt us?)
II. Assured of Faith (5-8a)

Eph 5:5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord

(Why do you think God wants us to be sure of our salvation? Would it be hard to live for Christ if we doubted our salvation all the time? What are some ways we be sure that we won’t be deceived by false religions? Have you ever had a relationship that caused you to stumble in your Walk for Christ?)

Our hope our joy is found in Christ. The resurrection is the reason for this. But do we truly understand this Resurrection? Have we come to understand the basics? During this resurrection season I encourage you to embrace and understand the resurrection. The resurrection is what makes our faith. Many people are like Peter and the other disciple were when they saw the empty tomb…..
John 20:1) Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2) So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." 3) So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4) Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5) And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6) Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7) and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8) Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9) for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. You see these disciples had no clue as to what was going to happen. Their problem was this….they did not understand who Christ truly is. The people most close to Christ whom they had lived, ate, and resided with, had no clue who he truly was. My question to you during this Easter holiday, when we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord is; Do you Understand Christ’s Power? Or are we like those disciples?
The writer of Hebrews was dealing with the same subject. These people were having a problem with putting angels and prophets in the same category with Christ. In the first chapter of Hebrews we see the writer of Hebrews make a case for the Supremacy of Christ. And if we are to fully understand the resurrection, we must first understand the Christ.

Keys to satisfaction Ephesians 5.1-2

I. Mimic God (vs1)

Eph 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.

In this first verse we see Paul bringing all of what he has written in Ephesians to a close. He tells us how to practically live this Christian life, and ultimately be satisfied. Paul begins by telling us to be imitators or followers of God. This literally means that we should mimic God. We do this through following, knowing and experiencing Christ. He also calls us to resemble God. We are his kids and there should be a family resemblance. Then obedience comes in. (How are we to mimic God? What are some ways we should “resemble God”? Should people be able to tell we are one of God’s? What makes obedience so hard?)

II. Live in Love (vs2)

Eph 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Paul now tells us to walk, or live in Love. This literally means God’s Love, and His Life. Paul give an example in Christ. Christ is our ultimate example in life. We see his life in the scriptures and we are to live as he did. Jesus first of all was a servant. He did not want to rise to popularity or prestige he just wanted to do what God had called him to be. He served. He also was an offering. He offered his perfect life up in the place of ours. This also made him a sacrifice. Not only did he sacrifice his life but also his wants, needs, desires. He gave it all up on the cross. (What about us how do we live day in and day out, does it resemble Christ’s Example? What do we hav eto present to God? Are we an worthy offering? How can we be the sacrifice that God wants us to be?)

I. Speech Control (vs25&29)
Eph 4:25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another………………………………………(29) Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
In this section of scripture we find the first key to putting off the lies we live, Its speech control. Our Speech is usually the first sign of who we truly are in Christ. We must understand that what comes out of our mouths is most of the time a good picture of what is in our hearts. Paul tell his readers that we must speak truth. Lies kill. We also must seek to speak encouraging words to one another. Our speech should be purposed TO build each other up instead of knocking each other down.

II. Self Control (vs26-28)
Eph 4:26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, (27) and give no opportunity to the devil. (28) Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
In this section of scripture we see the key of self control. Its amazing to see how many of us have no self control. Man is addicted to so many things that are sins and those that have become sin. Paul warns that without self control the devil has an opportunity to destroy our lives. Paul mentions anger first. Then he gets specific in his descriptions, talking about thieves. (Why is it important to have self control? What are some ways anger hurts the Christian? How can we be an example to believers and non believers around us?)
III. Spirit Controlled (vs30-32)
Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (31) Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. (32) Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
The last part of chapter 4 deals with the key of being spirit controlled. Paul says that we should not grieve the Holy Spirit. He is referring to not following the Spirit. Now its important to remember that the Holy Spirit is God and when we grieve Him we grieve God. So we must follow the Spirit. The question is how do you know it’s the Holy Spirit? To know the Spirit, is to know truth. God is going to lead you in the Truth, and he does this though the Holy Spirit. A life that is Spirit controlled is a life that will have fruit. When we are being lead by God will we refrain from the bad and cling to the good. Our lives will produce fruit like, kindness, forgiveness, and fellowship. ( How can we be Spirit Controlled? Why is it important to be Spirit Controlled? What are some fruits you have seen in other’s lives?)

Psalm 122.1-9
This was a Psalm written by David, but it was used by the captive pilgrims who were traveling from Babylon to Jerusalem. These folks hand not been able to worship for years, their hearts long to worship God. So when the opportunity finally came to worship the Lord they were very joyful.
Key- the old testament Jews had to have the temple to truly worship God. This was a daily thing and had been missed for several years. Thus the ability to worship again brought Joy.
A Longing to Worship

What does worshiping the Lord do for your life?

a. They were in awe at the sight of the place were they were to worship

a. It was important for them to continue to be able to worship
b. The peace of Jerusalem was important to the worship
The Israelites wanted the true worship of the Lord to continue, do we have that same burden to further the worship of the Lord

hey all in the land of blogging! Well i just came back from the beach and we started VBS. So our regular schedueled mayhem has been on hold for a while. Now on wed we will be celebrating our nations birthday! Its all about freedom. So i thought I would introduce our new series for Consumed Ministries. "Free Indeed". Moses truly had experienced God. He had been spoken to by the living God face to face. In this Psalm we have prayer made by Moses. When Moses talked to God he had few realizations. These realizations should be evident in our own lives as well.
